Becoming Stronger

Yep...that's my Rosie the riveter.  That's my ticket to the gun show right there.

I feel a shift happening in my life.

I was raised to be a good, kind, polite, whatever-you -want  kind of person. And for the most part those are all good things. Until you lose yourself somewhere in between.

I have always wanted people to say " Oh that Emily. She is such a nice person." So I did everything I could  so that no one could ever come back and say anything otherwise.

But I have noticed as  I get older and especially since I had kids.......... I'm tired of it. I'm tired of always not saying something or doing something  solely for the benefit of someone else.  I kinda feel like I've been censoring myself my whole life.

I'm not going to go all out and take the filter completely off ( because I know some of those people  and I don't like them either). But  I've been finding out that  I need to stand up for myself and especially my kids.

There are a few people in our lives that think they can do whatever they want, say whatever they want to me or my family. And normally, I would be very uncomfortable with it but just stand there and smile because I didn't want to be a B. And my hubby hates, with a capital H, confrontation so he will never say anything to anyone to avoid a fight.  So I feel like now, it's up to me. I'm not a doormat anymore and that, my friends, is going to ruffle a lot of feathers.

You know what?  .... Dang it.... I'm stronger than this. This is my life and my family. And to  H with anyone who's in my way now!

Road Trip Map for K

K, being four, is very interested in everything we do ALL THE TIME. It's a million questions for a trip to the grocery store. So I want her to be involved and as aware of what is going on with our trip as she can be. We are going to have our maps/gps to tell us where we are but  I really don't think she gets it by looking at stuff like that yet. She is only starting to realize when she sees the Arch in pictures that , hey, that's where I live.

I started brainstorming about giving her a map or something she could draw on that would be easy for her to understand and not just a regular old fold up map.  She's  awesome at her colors and really starting to always remember her letters and numbers.

I went online and found a site called : EduPlace . They have awesome black and white line drawing maps of the whole country and the world.  So I took the whole USA map and brought it into Photoshop ( but you could use any program for this)  and I traced around only the states we would be driving through. Can you see my excellent tracing skills?

I colored each a different color and put their abbreviations into each one.After I did, that I deleted the layer that the black and white map was on. I blew it up to be a whole 8.5'x 11" sheet size and added the fun border and title .

Now as we pass from state to state, I can tell her and she can fill in the state we are in. Of course the heart is home and the star is Pensacola Beach , FL where we are heading. K's Family Poster

At K's preschool , they have a fun thing called " Family of the Month". Each student gets to bring in a poster and talk about their family.  They spotlight  2-3 kids a month so everyone got a chance.  I had seen all the other cute posters the other families had made and they were awesome. All kinds of stickers, printouts and scrapbook supplies were used.

But me being me, I wanted to do something different so I thought..." they are studying their letters in school so why not make a giant letter k?"  It should be easy since K is a mostly straight letter.  I picked out a bunch  of  pictures of our family and other important people to us and K.  Then I took it all into Photoshop to mock it up to see how many picture I would really need and what direction they were going. ( I know,  a little over kill  but that's how I roll when i get something in my head)

So there is the mock up and you can see where the actual K is behind the pictures giving me a guide on how many and how I needed to cut them.

And here is what it looked like done. We wrote next to each picture explaining who it was and then K wrote her name and family at the bottom. ( see... it wasn't me with to much caffeine trying to write)

As we brought it in, the kids were pointing at it and saying " k" so it did what i wanted it to do. I'm sure you could to this with any letter, you'd just have to be creative with some of the more curvy ones.

Now it has a proud place on her bedroom door. And I'm sure we won't get to take it down for a long time.

Things I Love about St.Louis: Grant's Farm

(Third post in the "Things I love about Saint Louis" series)

Grant's Farm has always been special to me. When I was little and lived in the city, it was the only place I could go ( besides the Zoo) to see animals and especially horses. I love horses. All my old friends reading this right now are going.. yep. If you are going to see horses, Clydesdale are some magnificent horses to see up close.

I may be a little bias because I had the privilege of getting to work here one season during college. It was the best job I ever had. I got to be outside, talk to people all day, and be around animals.  I helped and met people from all over the world. It was a blast.

Grant's Farm is a fun place to take your family to see some animals, do some fun activities and have some free beer. Yes.. I said free beer.   It was originally owned by Ulysses S Grant's in-laws and the property was bought by August Busch Sr.  ( of Anheuser Busch fame ) and was his "80 acre country estate" back when the commute by wagon took a whole day from the brewery downtown.

They opened it up to the public in 1954  and the rest is history.  You  pay $12 to park, and there are other extras you can pay for once inside like carousel rides, feeding the goats, feeding the camels, and of course food and gift  shop items.Or you can go for free after that...it's up to you.

Your visit starts with a 15 min tram ride ( like a car/train ride) around the property to see some of the wild animals like deer, donkeys, cattle, bison . The kids love this part and on a warm day nothing feels better.

Where are the animals? We didn't see many that day and and what we did see were ffaaarr away.

They offer Private expeditions in a special van which we have done once. It was pretty cool and definitely a little VIP but it's a little pricey so we've only done it the one time.

After the tram ride is over, then you are at the Tier Garten area where the carousel, goats, elephant show, and  bird shows are. They sell a pass now for $5 which is well worth the price. You get  2 bottles for the goats,  ne carousel ride ( one adult is included to take the child) and one snow cone.  Even thought we don't usually eat the snow cone it's still a heck of a deal.

You can feed baby goats with a bottle through a fence or if you don't mind goats up close and personal... you can walk into there little area where  they kinda jump on you and eat your clothes. We haven't gotten to that point yet. Maybe when the girls are older.

 K has a real fascination with elephants so for th first time we took them to sit through the elephant show.  Our star of the the day was " Bud" the elephant.  He has been there a long time and as well taken care of as he can be. He gave quite a performance. Even S was impressed, look below.

A short walk down a path leads you to the Bauernhof area. This was the building that housed August Busch's horses and carriages. Isn't it cool looking? I always feel like I'm somewhere else or some other time when I walk in there. There is always lively polka music playing so it's very festive.

The Bauernhof is also the place to go for some food, snacks and that free beer I was telling you about earlier. Each adult over 21 gets two free samples per day. Or if you go with someone who doesn't want theirs , well, you might get more. They usually have about 6-10 different kinds on tap. And on a hot day,  they taste really good.

There is something about all the textures and colors I just love.

Some of the Busch family still uses them on occasion as the Busch Family Mansion is also on the property. (they show you a view very quickly on the tram tour and when you are feeding the camels on the way to the Bauernhof you can see the side back of it down the road.)

When you are done at the top of the farm, you jump back on the tram and go back down the hill to the gift shop and exit area. The gift shop really does have some cute things for kids and adults. There are all kinds of price ranges. We can usually get out of there with the kids only for less than $10 if anything at all.   You then cross the bridge again , go back into the parking lot and follow the white horseshoe prints to the Clydesdale stables and breeding barn at the far end of the parking lot.

The keep a bunch of the young male Clydesdales here that pull the hitch along with a few mares and foals. They are such beautiful horses along with gentle and patient with all of the people constantly taking their picture and staring at them all day.  After you walk through the main barn, you get to walk outside and see some of them in their pastures.  We saw a young one out by himself. After a while he came to the fence and let us pet him.

If someone were coming to Saint Louis for a long weekend, I would definitely send them here. Everyone seems to love it and comes back again and again.

So...wow... 10 things. I haven't even gotten my about me page up yet so I'll have to leave some things for that ( wink wink). I can give out all the good stuff, right?

So here are ten random things about me:

1. I'm pretty lactose intolerant. But I still eat ice cream because I love it. It's a very one sided relationship.

2. My favorite day of the week is Saturday. But Thursday is Friday-eve ( right, Tasha?) so it's a close second.

3. I can not play any musical instrument. But I wish I could play the guitar, ukelele,piano or violin.  I'll be softly pushing my daughters towards one  of those.

4. I've never been on TV that I know of and I'm not sure if I want to be.

5. I'm a night owl but I love the early morning. go figure.

6. I used to have two ear piercing per ear in high school and college. Man, I'm glad I didn't do more.

7. I've never really had a nickname except Em. Not real exciting.

8. Never smoked  a thing ( except second hand, yucky)

9. I'm not too much into hard rock. There are a few I like but not many.

10. I wouldn't mind seeing a ghost but it has to be a friendly, not ugly or scary one.

10 reasons you should love the Library

We love the library. I'm a huge reader and I hope I'm getting my girls to be the same. We go to the library every week. Yep... every week.  I'll give you ten  good reasons why you need to go to the library today if not tomorrow.

1. Books are never old or tired of.
We check out at least 20 books for them every time we go. Sometimes they will pick out ones we have read before but for the most part , they are always new. I ask K what she wants to read about, look it up and bam, there we go.  They do have their own books that we own and love getting new ones but we could never keep up with how much they like new books.

2. It's Free
To me, it's the thrill of getting new things for free! Where else can you do this? Uh...no where. Ok... maybe your mom's house but it's not nice to always take her stuff. You don't live there anymore remember?

3. 1000s of DVDs
The DVD collection for the kids is reason enough to go. There are hundreds, if not thousands of kids movies and shows on DVD and we can watch them all.  When they get sick of one, we go get another one. We canceled our mail-to -home DVD service and this has been so much better. They may not have the newest stuff but that's what Redbox , Netflix or Best buy is for.

4. It's a place to go
You just have to get out of the house because...it's been raining/it's too hot/you've been sick/ the kids are driving you crazy.... just pick a reason. My other stay at home mommies can relate. I pack up the kids and we drive over to the library for 30-45 minutes. It take about that long before S starting singing loudly or rearranging the book shelves in a not so nice kinda way. It's time away from home and  a break for mommy. We even go to other branches  that I call "  New  libraries" K thinks it's pretty cool when we go to a " new library" Like, how did you find this, mom?

5. The CDs
You may have to wait a while but you can listen to a whole brand new cd and decide if you even like it enough to buy it. It has seriously saved me tons. Again, for free.

6. Summer Reading Club
 ah... the summer reading club. You have a certain number of books to read and then you get a prize. Last year we got a bag, a bouncy ball, a book, and some food coupons.  When we were little it was a pizza card from Pizza Hut. You got your own personal pan pizza!!!! Oh, the sheer kid bliss of it all. That was reason enough for me. In a house of three kids, nothing was ever your own. But this little pizza was mine, all mine.

7. You can donate your old books/magazines
Yes, they will take your new and gently used books and even magazines and sell them to benefit the library. There is usually a table or box right when you are walking in the doors. (This is true for the Saint Louis county branches. I'm not sure about others.)

8. Your family tree could be there
I'm a family tree junkie ( you just haven't witnessed it...yet) I love learning new things about old relatives and sharing it with my family. At the Main Saint Louis County and  Main Saint Louis City Branch, they have a whole section/ wing/ level dedicated to genealogy. It's completely fascinating.

9. Activities for kids
There are craft days, read out loud days, and movie days. A lot of this is for kids older than mine but I can't wait to take them when they can both enjoy it.

10. E-Books

Now you can get on your kindle, nook or IPad some really great books that you don't have pay for. There is still a limit on how long you can keep them but you can just re-request it and there you go. I plan on taking out a few for our upcoming vacation.

Caillou Party for S

My little baby, S, turned 2 last week.  I swing between thinking ...man...she can't be that old already.. ..to...she's already 2 ?  I don't want her  to not be my baby any more. But as all moms say, they'll always be my babies.

I asked S , a few weeks ago what kind of party she wanted and showed her a catalog of birthday supplies that I got. She immediately pointed to Caillou.  For those that don't know, Caillou is a show about a bald little 4 year old boy, his mom, dad, sister Rosie and cat, Gilbert. Caillou is always learning how to be a good boy and  grow up. We watch the episodes that are on the  Sprout channel which is an off shoot of PBS. There are other episodes I've seen where Caillou is much more whiny and a pain but they are never on Sprout and I don't know why. As always , we have a tight budget so I knew I was doing everything myself.

So I started with the invitations...

I grabbed some clip art off  the internet and then made this file in Photoshop.( I can send you the file if you want. I haven't figured out how to make it downloadable here) Then I sent it to Walgreens and had it printed as 4x6s. So $2 for all the invites. Score!

Caillou is always wearing yellow, red and blue. A nice easy color combination to do and available everywhere. Since I did the colored circles on the invitations , I went and cut out, using my handy dandy circle cutter from Micheals, a whole bunch of red, yellow and blue paper circles. The pack of colored printer paper was $4 at Walmart.

I also bought a tiny  6" tall Caillou plush/plastic doll at ToysRUs. I figured it was double duty decoration and toy when the party was over.

  The dessert portion of the party was cupcakes and ice cream.  So I made vanilla cupcakes with chocolate butter cream icing and chocolate cupcakes with vanilla cream cheese icing.  The cupcake recipe was from Tidy Mom. And they really were very good. The chocolate butter cream recipe was from the back of the C&H powdered sugar box. Very tasty. And the cream cheese icing recipe was from the  Betty Crocker (everyone has it ) binder cookbook. I used a cupcake holder that my mom always lets be borrow.

To go with my primary color/Caillou, theme I also bought some M&Ms. After I was done icing the cupcakes, I sat there, picked out the red, yellow, and blue candy and put them on the cupcakes to match the paper circles. I also cut up the box that  the Caillou toy came in , taped the images to toothpicks and added them to the cupcakes for more fun.

I went to the party store by our house and got a bunch of balloons in red, blue and yellow. Some even had a 2 on them. When I was at Trader Joes, I also picked up some gorgeous yellow sunflowers to go with my theme.

I went downstairs and started slapping the circles as randomly as I could on the walls. I  really liked how fun everything looked and how easy and cheap it was.

S loved everything. She loved playing with her friends, opening her presents, and eating her M and M's. She had quite a haul.  I can't wait to see what next year's party theme will be.

Beach Countdown Calender DIY

We finally made our plans for our vacation. We are going to Pensacola Beach, FL and will be staying right on the beach.It's been four years since I was last at the beach and that is four years to long.

Different beach but still awesome.....Treasure Island, FL back in 2007.

After I made the reservations and things were definite, we told K that we were going to the beach and showed her pictures. She's never been and this will be her first time to see the gulf/ocean. I'm so excited for her to see it for the first time. I can hardly stand it.  I can't decide if I should have J hold her inside while I run outside with the camera to capture those first shots as she sees the beach from our condo.And do I use the  still camera  or the video part to get the priceless audio? Hmm...decisions, decisions.

Now everyday since we told her, she wakes up or at some point during the day asks " Mom,are we going to the beach today?"  And when I say " No" ,she says" Are we going to the beach tomorrow?" To which I then say " No, in a few weeks"

At this point,  I started thinking we need a way to count down the beach that is very easy for her to understand and grasp.  I have a bag/bottles of sand/shells that I saved from every beach trip J and I have taken.

I like to save sand from beaches that I have been to. I know, weird. But looking at it makes me happy. It's actually right here on the computer desk. I have one from every place we have been and one that is waiting for this trip. All the sand actually has a different look to each place. It's kinda cool how that is.

I figured we could use that sand/shells in a hourglass kinda way. When we were at Walmart the other day (oh, I know...while we were there someone's car horn actually did the"Dixie" song....only at Walmart) I found this vase/hurricane that I liked ($2.99), I had a green paint pen from another project, and great blue ribbon that came on a present.

I measured and marked the days on the side with numbers in the lime green paint marker.

Then I  added the cool blue ribbon. What color is that anyway? I love it.  I used double sided tape so that if I ever needed to take it off , I could.

I also had some foam craft letter left from K's Valentine's Day  Box so I spelled the word "beach" on the top  of the ribbon.

I gave K a scoop,a bottle of sand ,and told her to fill it to the first line and then a bunch more.

Now every day she adds the sand and shells to the next line. She of course wants to keep filling but I told her she and S get to fill it every day until we leave and when it is full... it's time to hit the road.

At dinner the other day she asked:

" Mom, is it a long car ride?"
"Yes..it is long."
" We will have to bring books, and toys and snacks."
" Yes and dvds and maybe even take some naps so we get there even faster"
" Ok... I'll take a small nap for you."
