Olive Oil tasting at Olive Ovation

Back when I shot the Ladies Luncheon for my friend Jessica and Our Ladies Inn, I also bid on some silent auction items.  One of which was a Olive Oil tasting party at Olive Ovation. And I had the highest bid. Yippee!  It sounded like a good time.  I love olive oil, dipping things in it, and cooking with it so I knew I couldn't go wrong .

I was thinking about setting up the party when our friend Laura (from The DIY Couple) sent me an email asking if we wanted to go to a olive oil tasting party that she won at an auction. Craziness. So we talked and merged our parties together.

I called Marianne ,the owner, and she couldn't have been nicer or more accommodating to our situation.  Last Thursday, we finally got to go to the tasting and it did not disappoint.  The shop is located in  downtown Clayton, MO by the Ritz Carlton in a newer little shopping area.

She greeted us with an after hours tasting, dips and appetizers already set up. She also told us we could bring our own snacks and wine, which we totally did. BYOW :)  After everyone had arrived, we talked, munched, and walked around the store. The entire olive bar was ours to taste.  Yum-E!  I was in heaven . I love olives and I couldn't get enough.  They had a new olive called the Castelvetrano . It was a large green olive with a smooth but great taste.

After a bit of eating and drinking of some wine,  she began by telling us a bit about olives, how olive oil was made, and what made each one different/unique and what made each one good and even better.  Did you know olive oil can go bad? Did you know how long that takes? Not too long. A bunch of us looked at each other and said we needed to go home and check the dates on the bottles we had. Yikes!

Then she explained the olive oil tasting bar. She had olive oils from all over the world, some of the more exotic being from South Africa and Palestine. They were arranged from soft and mild to bold and almost spicy. Each tasting bottle had where the oils were from , the flavors you could expect and  what kind of wine would go best.

She explained how to taste the olive oil by using these little cups, pumping the bottle three times to get enough, smell it just like a wine,  then sipping the oil letting it roll around your tongue and then breathing in a little through your tongue to spread it around. The stronger oils would actually make your throat feel warm and make your cough because of the antioxidants in the oils.  I know what you're thinking.. crazy stuff . I had no idea that oil could do all of this.

They also had some amazing balsamic vinegars. I love almost anything with vinegar so I was sold before I even started tasting. Imagine the best vinegars and oils you've ever tried from the grocery store and throw that out the window. These were all way more flavorful and the quality was incredible.

The store was filled with all kinds of different things to buy and try. They have local honey and local soaps made from soy.   The honey was so much more intense than what you can buy in the store and I was surprised by how different two local honeys can taste.

We ended up buying this olive oil and this vinegar. The vinegar has honey in it which makes it sweet but with that kick that I love. And the olive oil was so soft and buttery. It was actually easy to eat it plain, it was that good.

We have already used both of these with dinner and vegetables.  I loved  them drizzled on my salad as well. Their online site is great if you need a gift for the foodie in your life.  Or if you live in Saint Louis, I highly recommend a trip over there to see Marianne. You can sample some of the oils, vinegars, and  honeys any time you come in. She'll help you pick out the best one for you.

( I was in no way compensated for this post. The stuff was just that good and I wanted to share. The opinions are all my own)

Vintage School Room Mantel

I've just started getting into decorating my mantel after joining the world of blogging. Everyone seems to be doing it and it looks so good when there's something on it. My poor mantel has been bare minus a photo here and there for  5 years now. There's always a Christmas mantel but  unfortunately it has to come down in January :(

The mantel decor that I did for  4th of July/Olympics was alot of fun and  I kept it up through the Olympics from about   July 10- end of August ( I'm lazy) But now it's time for school and fall.  I'm not ready for pumpkins yet so I needed something "schooly".

I started looking around my house for school type stuff. And I made this...

I had a small chalkboard we found at a thrift store that was originally going to go outside on the playhouse.  And I had some Ball jars left over from some pickles my godmother gave me. Add some sunflowers from Trader Joe's and there's the first part.

It seems like I have an love of primary colors (and maybe I do). I wanted some garland to drape across the mantel. I went to Hobby Lobby got some super cute blue ribbon with polka dots and some felt to make some apples. I drew an apple. Then cut out the pieces individually and then super glued them together and then to the blue ribbon.

The little white owl came from Target. I will someday put him in my newly redesigned office. So he's not old but he fit nicely with everything.  My godmother had also given me a bunch of old books that were hers along time ago. I had kept them becuase they were so cool looking and were actually books I read. Look at how cool and aged they are...

I had this old brownie camera that my grandpa had given me years ago that I was using on top of a shelf.  I love the worn edges and the simplicity of the old cameras. It  just makes me think of first day of school pictures that my grandpa/grandma would have taken.

Something still seemed missing , so I asked my mom if she had anything vintage schooly and she said she had this lunch box that belonged to my uncle.  How great is that?

Here is everything together. I have to apologize for the lighting. This room has one source of light and it is a glass door to the right of the fireplace. I had  to use overhead fan light and lamps to help light the space. Not the best as far as lighting goes.

And so you all don't think everything here is perfect....this is what the rest fo the room looks like....

I love back to school time. with all of the books and supplies. What makes you think of school? What would you put on your "schooly" mantel?

Don't poop on your own parade!

Yes..... I said this to my sister.

She had gotten some really great news and was super excited bbbuuuttttt she was about to tell someone that no matter how well meaning was going to bring her down from a well deserved high.  I told her " L, Don't poop on your own parade!"

We all need those happy days. The days when it seems like everything is going right and nothing can stop you now.  (Cue hokey soundtrack now.)There are so many days that are not exciting, joyful, all about hope and happiness that when you have one...for god sakes..... don't tell anyone who is going to poop all over  it!

So maybe keep it to yourself until the awesome high is fading, then brace yourself, and tell that person. Knowing full well , they are not going to share your joy.  Just smile and hold that happiness inside while they try to strip it away ( not knowing, of course)

However, that negative voice can even be yourself. I read somewhere once that if we though of that mean voice as an actual person, we wouldn't let them talk to us like that.  I try to remember that when I get down on myself but  life happens and sometimes that negative voice wins.

Either way ladies....Just don't poop on your own parade!!

This has been another Entirely Emily P.S.A.

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner!!! ( Happy Bomb!)

Ok....oh my gosh... Ok....  Oh my gosh. I won something!  I never win anything. No really... I don't.  I'm always the last person called at any kind of raffle when the last thing left is a free pen.

A huge big thank you to Iffy at Stay At Home Nation and Ancestry.com! I just won a year long premier membership to Ancestry.com.  My family and I are always looking to find new information on ancestors  and sharing it with other relatives. I find it completely fascinating when you can find another family  member or more info  about the ones you already knew about. I had one of their trial  memberships before but after it ran out, I just daydreamed about it.

This awesome wall of family photos is at my mom's house. Even though they moved once , the photo wall went up again at the new house. It wouldn't be right without it.  It's not all  fancy and artsy but that's my history right there, all sitting together.  Now, I get to find out as much as I can about them. Pretty cool.

Iffy always has great giveaways and a linky party that I have had the pleasure of being featured on.  She's getting ready to rock this fall with all kinds of cool posts.

Check  out  Iffy's blog    for bloggy coolness ( like naked Barbie cover ups LOL )  And check out Ancestry.com  for anything you've ever wanted to know about your family. The trial membership is so cool you'll want to keep digging for more info. And you know, now  you will be seeing some family history type posts coming up in  the future so stay tuned.

( I was not paid at all for this post.  I was just so excited to win that  I couldn't help it )

Little M's Birthday Party ( photo shoot)

I was super surprised and totally honored when my old friend Jessica asked me to photograph her little daughter, M's First Birthday.  I couldn't wait.  I love to photograph different situations and people. I feel like I learn so much every time I photograph something new. And she was going to pay me...bonus!

Her mommy did up her party in a ladybug theme complete with a bunch of stuff from Etsy.  I'll get the links from her later. But it was super cute including this cake.

It was a great day, a little overcast and then a little rain but that light made for some great photography.

Apparently, her little boyfriend even came :) She better snatch him up now. Cute little guy.

She even took time out of her party to push her big brother on the swing.  Look at those bloomers.

Then of course it was time for this little cutey to get some cake...

It was present time....

M and her Daddy

She thought she was a present.

Look at that smile with her new rocking horse. And the happy grandma in the background.

I took about a ba-jillion  pictures and  have already knocked it down a ton but I still have to make some cuts and tweak the winners so off I go.  This was so much fun. Thanks Jessica for letting me be a part of her special day.

Technical Stuff for other learning photographers like me

The light was great that day. The overcast-ness of the day rocked. I was shooting mostly in Manual with a little AV thrown in there. My aperture was all over the place depending whether I was inside or out  I did tend to shoot more wide open(2.8) to get that soft background. However then I had a bunch of shots that the focus was not tack sharp in and I know that is why. Sigh. I hate that. It's just part of the leaning curve I suppose.  I was using AI SERVO a lot more for this since the kids were always moving but it's a little hard to get used to. It's a whole different way of focusing. Sometimes I miss my manual film camera. It was all up to me and if it didn't work, I knew why.

The indoor shots had a very high ISO of 1000-4000 even with some flash thrown in there. Again, I'm still learning so indoor stuff is where I need  a bunch of practice. I had to help them in post-processing ( I use Photoshop)

15 things I hope my girls remember me saying

When I am talking to my girls, I often hope that I'm saying the right things. The things they will remember, the things that will make them stronger, the things that make them feel not alone...and if I say them enough be ingrained into their little brains for life.  Even if they don't realize it . There is still a bunch of things that I can hear my mom saying in my head all the time so I figure it must work :)

1.  You are the best you that ever was. God doesn't make mistakes.
2.  You can be anything you want. I mean it , anything. (OK maybe there are a few nos in there but that's another post)
3.  You can tell me anything. I won't judge you or yell at you. Just be honest with me.
4.  You can ask me anything. I'll tell you the truth ( to a point)
5.  Dress how you want, draw what you want, read what you want, be who you were meant to be.  Not somebody else. Don't change for anyone.
6. You is smart. You is good. You is important.( yes, I know...it's from " The Help"  but it's still good to tell them)
7. Wait to kiss the boys, it will be worth it. They don't kiss good for a long time.
8. Just because he says he loves you, doesn't mean you have to do anything you don't want to.
9.  I'm always on your side ( unless you are hurting yourself then I will stop you)
10. You will have a lot of friends in your life. Some will stay. Some will go. And some might even come   back. They all don't have to last forever but you hope they do.
11. Only be with a guy that loves you even when things aren't perfect because life never is.
12. Watch how anyone treats their pets, that's how they'll treat you.
13. You can be nice but don't let people take advantage of you. Stand up for yourself.
14. You two(k&s) should always look out for each other. She will be your best friend some day.
15. I'll always love you no matter what. Even if I'm mad at you, I still love you.And even if you are mad at me, I'll still love you.

What bits of wisdom are you trying to ingrain into your kids' heads?

Things I love about Saint Louis: Missouri Botanical Garden

This is the 6th post in my Things I love about Saint Louis Series. Check them out!

( This is a very picture heavy post. I can't help myself. I took 120 pictures. Consider yourselves lucky)

We are lucky enough here in Saint Louis to have so many amazing things to do, see, visit and eat. One of those is the Missouri Botanical Garden.   It is a beautiful  acre Garden and research center that you can walk through.

When J and I got engaged we knew we wanted an outdoor wedding since we felt closer to God out in nature than any other place we could think of.  But we weren't crazy,  we needed a backup area in case it rained.  We had been to the Botanical Garden before and heard there were a few areas to get married.  So we checked it out and decided on the Japanese Garden by the Lake and backup area in the auditorium.

The Missouri Botanical Garden is 79 beautiful acres in Saint Louis City that once belonged to a man named Henry Shaw. There is a Chinese Garden, the Climatron(big dome thing that is pretty warm and mimickes the rain forest), the Japanese Garden., the Children's Garden...there is a lot to see.  It is pretty much like walking into the prettiest park you have ever seen.  It is $8 for adults and kids 12 and under are free. Of course you can become a member and get discounts and free tickets to things. And if you are a Saint Louis City or County Residents and go before noon Wednesdays and Saturdays, you get in free. Not too bad.

We normally can spend about 2 hours there walking around, letting the kids play, and taking pictures.  This weekend we got to see the Lantern Festival. Of course we went during the day, not at night. I heard it was even better then (and it was pretty pricey) but I wanted to take pictures of the plants.

There were beautiful lanterns and sculpture all over the Garden. They were made from a satin material and flexible steel rods as the skeleton. So colorful and  intricate even in the sun.

They  had two dragons made out of china plates, cups, saucers and other plate ware.

See... plates, cups, saucers. Pretty amazing stuff.

The flowers, trees, and plants here were just beautiful. You can't even tell we've had a drought in this area.

There are two things that K looks forward to when we come here...the sheep sculpture to sit on...

And the Children's Garden. There is a slide, cave, play store, jail, rope bridge, and other fun outside kids things to explore.

They also have some awesome sculptures there. And I don't know about you but I'm a sucker for a a sculpture. They are beautiful works of art and from a photography stand point, they are great models because they don't move :)

And she's my favorite...isn't she beautiful.  I want her in my backyard so bad.

When my hubby and I got married here 6 years ago(ahh, the wedded bliss of it all)  There was an exhibit by Dale Chihuly. He makes gorgeous works of art out of glass in different forms. Here are two images from our wedding album to show what was there. Our photographer took these..not me.

They were able to purchase some of his work that is still there in the main building and a few around the garden.

They have a few big events here every year like the Whittaker Jazz festival, Japanese festival coming up during the Labor Day weekend and the Best of Missouri Market in October. They are crowded so get there as early as you can. And there is an additional charge because it is a special event. We really enjoy this place so much so that we signed up for a membership this year to enjoy more of what the Garden has to offer.
